SPRED Program: Making Friends and Building Connections

Our SPRED (Special Religious Development) Program, also called the Personal Advocacy Program, is dedicated to helping adults with intellectual disabilities build meaningful friendships and connections within the community.

Recognised as a valued provider of advocacy in Western Australia, the program stands out by focusing on the development of the “whole person” over time, rather than on immediate issue resolution.

Through one-on-one friendships with dedicated volunteers (Advocates), individuals with disabilities (Friends) are supported to participate more fully in both the spiritual and social life of the Church and broader community.

What to Expect in the SPRED Program

Personal Connection

Each participant (we refer to as a Friend) is matched with a dedicated volunteer, known as a “community friend” or “advocate,” who provides support and companionship. This advocate is there just for you, to help you feel safe, comfortable, and confident. Together, you’ll explore new experiences, get to know other people in the group, and share stories of your life. Your advocate will help you with:

Group Fun and Support

The SPRED Program connects you to a small group of friends with disabilities, along with other volunteers. You’ll engage in activities like crafts, music, and storytelling, and then set up and share a meal with your group. These group interactions awaken and express deeper spiritual feelings, helping you feel more connected to yourself and others. The group is a safe and caring space where friendships grow over time, and you feel included, appreciated, and supported.

Safe and Supportive Environment

Your advocate will guide and encourage you to connect with others, share your thoughts, and contribute your unique gifts to the group. As your friendship with your advocate grows, they will also help make others aware of your needs and speak on your behalf when needed. Having someone by your side helps you feel confident in new settings, allowing you to fully participate in activities with comfort and joy.

How the SPRED Program Works

Small Group Gatherings

Each group consists of six advocates, six friends with disabilities, and two trained leaders. Together, they meet regularly in community spaces, like the Morley centre or local parish centres, on the same day every two weeks during school terms. Your advocate will pick you up from your home, stay by your side throughout the session, and bring you back safely afterward. This ensures that you are supported at every step of the way.

One-on-One Support and Consistency

You will meet in the same group with the same members every time. In each session, you and your advocate will work together on activities like arts and crafts, enjoy music and song, and share stories. This consistent structure makes it easier to build long-lasting, meaningful relationships. The sessions last two hours, but extra time is allowed for pick-up and drop-off, giving you and your advocate a little extra time together.

Activities that Foster Friendship and Connection

At each meeting, you’ll have the chance to work on hands-on activities, set up and enjoy supper, and simply be together. Your advocate will help you interact and connect with others in ways that feel comfortable and natural. This safe, small group setting allows friendships to blossom, creating bonds that go beyond the group into everyday life, helping you feel more confident and connected.

Our Program’s Roots

SPRED (Special Religious Development)

The SPRED (Special Religious Development) Program follows the Archdiocese of Chicago’s model, which began in the 1960s. This model pairs volunteers with people with intellectual disabilities, fostering friendships that support spiritual and social growth.
The SPRED approach emphasises inclusive, one-to-one relationships that develop in small group settings.

Over the years, SPRED has spread globally, bringing the joy and dignity of belonging to people with disabilities in many communities.
