Personal Advocacy Service (PAS) welcomed a wonderfully diverse group of participants to its Grow to Cook: Winter Warmers workshop on Saturday 4 July, bringing the community together to learn, cook and share a meal.
The well-attended event brought together both familiar and new faces from across the PAS and local community, including SPRED friends and advocates, people with intellectual disability and their carers, supporters and family members, members of the Deaf Community, young people and our neighbours from Holdhurst Way.
Led by qualified Nutritionist Nicole Ingram from Grow Cook Eat WA, the workshop began with a presentation exploring seasonal produce and the benefits of community gardening.
Participants then headed outside for a tour of the growing PAS Community Garden, where they had the opportunity to see what was growing, pick fresh herbs and even take home PAS-grown broccoli.
From the garden to the table
It was then time to get cooking!
Participants formed small teams of two to four, with each group given a recipe card and their own cooking station. Using seasonal produce, the teams prepared a delicious range of dishes, including:
- Guacamole dip
- Fruit salad parfaits
- Thai pumpkin curry
- Roasted cauliflower salad
- Winter flavours gnocchi
Once the cooking was complete, everyone came together around the table to share the dishes and enjoy the results of their collective efforts.
More than simply a cooking workshop, the event was an opportunity for people of different ages, abilities and backgrounds to connect, learn from one another and experience the joy of growing, preparing and sharing food together.
A big thank you to Nicole for sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm, and to everyone who joined us and helped make our first Grow to Cook workshop such a welcoming and enjoyable day.
Keep growing with us
The journey continues with our next event, Grow to Eat, on 8 August.
This hands-on workshop will head into the garden, with participants learning practical skills for growing fresh food at home, creating healthy soil, composting and transplanting seedlings. Participants will also explore the PAS Community Garden, plant together and share ideas for how the garden can continue to grow as an inclusive and welcoming community space.
